A 59-year-old retired American police officer who came to vacation on the island of Amorgos, Greece, has disappeared.

American Tourist Missing in Amorgos

According to some sources, the American tourist and retired police officer went for a hike on a challenging path in Amorgos, but has not returned or been seen since. The man reportedly had his mobile phone with him, but has not answered it or been seen since this evening (Tuesday, June 11).

The disappearance of the 59-year-old was reported to the Amorgos Police Station by a friend who was vacationing with him on the island. The friend told the police that the retired police officer began hiking this morning from Aegiali, following a marked path with the final destination planned to be Katapola Amorgos. The estimated journey time for this trek is around four hours and five minutes.

At roughly 3.20pm, the American tourist had still not arrived in Katapola, which caused his friend to become concerned and start to call him. He got no answer. In fact, the retired policeman had two mobile phones with him, one with a French number and one with a US number. His last contact was reportedly with his sister. He sent her a photo of the trail sign.

Investigations were conducted immediately by all the police officers in Amorgos, with the assistance of firemen and volunteer rescuers, while a request was sent to locate the signal of the mobile phones.

Tomorrow (Wednesday, June 12), a team of police officers from Naxos will go to help with the investigations, with the hope of finding the American in Amorgos.

Dr Michael Mosley’s Disappearance and Death

The news comes just days after the disappearance – and what later turned out to be – death of Dr Michael Mosley, a TV doctor and celebrity in the UK. Dr Mosley’s body was found on the Greek island of Symi, days after he was reported missing.

His body was discovered in a rocky area of Agia Marina, north of the town of Pedi, where he was last seen in a CCTV video. His body was spotted by Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas, the mayor of Symi, and a group of journalists who were combing the area of Agia Marina on a boat.

The British presenter appeared to have taken a dangerous path through the rocky mountain terrain on his way down to the beach of Agia Marina. He likely either got dizzy or passed out due to the intense heat. He could have slipped and fallen near the fence, causing him to lose his life.

“The features and the clothes he was wearing show that it is him. Police and Coast Guard forces have arrived at the scene,” said Deputy Mayor of Symi Nikitas Gryllis in speaking to MEGA at the time.

Earlier, Papakaloudoukas had questioned how anyone could survive in the 40 degree Celsius heat on the day Mosley disappeared. He added the area Mosley is believed to have traversed is “difficult to pass” and is “only rocks.” It is also populated by “loads” of snakes, he said.

“Instead of following the road to Gyalos, he seems to have preferred to go around the port, in Pedi,” the mayor told Proto Thema. “We do not know what this man might have had in mind.”
